ST BRIGID'S LOWER SCHOOL

Ages 3 - 9

Welcome to St Brigid's Lower School page! As your child begins their educational journey at St. Brigid's we aim to nurture and guide them every step along the way. We want to inspire them to be the best they can be and to ensure that they thrive throughout their time at St Brigid's and for the rest of their lives.

St Brigid's Lower School department caters specifically for children between the ages of 3 and 8 years old and covers the first six years of schooling from Nursery up to Year 4.

We aim to give children the very best possible start to their education, in a holistic way that enables the whole child to flourish. We recognise the importance of early education and the impact this can have upon children as they progress through St. Brigid’s School and their lives. We aim to provide the very best educational and spiritual experiences possible through delivering a thorough, broad, and balanced curriculum.

LEARNING

In designing our curriculum, we recognise that the needs of our children are ever changing and that we must adapt to meet those needs, as such, pupil voice plays an important part in our curriculum design.  We aim to provide an immerse experience where children are surrounded by opportunities to develop within our Brigidine Learner Profile.

We are, knowledge seekers, truth tellers, joy bringers and game changers!

From September 2022 we will be following the New Curriculum for Wales, this comprises of six Areas of Learning and Experiences: Languages, Literacy and Communications, Mathematics and Numeracy, Health and Well-being, Science and Technology, Expressive Arts and Humanities. It also encompasses three cross-curricular strands: Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Competency.  Our curriculum enables us to join up our vision and values and ensure that our learners are ethical and healthy citizens, ambitious and enterprising in line with the Four Purposes.

We aim to ensure our curriculum provides appropriate progression for learners of different ages, abilities and aptitudes. We use a variety of assessment methods to ensure that all children are making progress at a rate that is appropriate, but also ensures that our children are stretched and challenged.

During Lower School we have six overarching themes around which each class plans and delivers their learning these are; People, Together, Fact and Fantasy, Growth, Our World and Change.

Equipment and Belongings:

We remind pupils that they are responsible for their own belongings. Please make sure all of these re labelled with your child's name. Stationary is generally available at school; however, your child should bring their own personal equipment if they are in Year 3/4.

An example pencil case for a typical Year3/4 child would include:

  • Small regular pencil case

  • HB pencils

  • Blue handwriting pen (No biros)

  • Small ruler

  • Eraser

  • Dry wipe whiteboard pen

  • Selection of colouring pencils

  • Small pencil sharpener with shavings catcher (no larger winding sharpeners please)

  • Glue stick

  • Highlighter pen

Please ensure all items can fit inside a small pencil case. This ensures they cannot be lost while at school or when transporting to and from school.

Pupils in Year 3 - 6 also take part in swimming lessons and will be asked to provide a single piece swimming costume/trunks and towel.
